 | Must I Paint You A Picture | |
This is a 40 track 2 CD (+ bonus CD of 10 rarities) compilation of the best of Billy Bragg stretching for the 20 years of his career so far. It's in chronological order and starts with the beautiful A New England his classic, wistful song of a love lost where he says 'I don't want to change the world, I'm not looking for New England'. He started off as a punk troubadour (perhaps influenced by Patrik Fitzgerald, the Clash and folk music?) and early songs were love and real life mixed with early political songs about Unions, the Diggers and social concern. It's easy to forget that one man playing just an electric guitar was an unusual and brave thing to do - but he ploughed his lonely furrow. The absolute highlight for me has to be the collaboration with Wilco on Mermaid Avenue when Billy stepped out of his punky Cockney genre and proved, much to some people's surprise, that he could produce magnificent American roots music as well. Billy really has covered a lot of ground in his career but has always been as English as English could be. Listening to this compilation it reminds you that he has written some great love songs like Must I Paint You A Picture and lots more besides. If you grew up with Billy Bragg, It will also bring back memories of times in your own life where he played on the soundtrack. | |
