This Chicago husband and wife duo are true mavericks and this is music that explores the darker side of the human psyche. There's something about the lyrics and the atmosphere of the music that is really quite profound - these don't sound like personal confessions but you can still hear genuine pain and disturbing experiences transformed into these sad and funny stories. An exception is My Ghost that hints of real mental disturbance from amore personal point of view. Once you see The Handsome Family live you quickly pick up on the dry humour that pervades everything they do but this is not a comedy duo. Listen to the sad lament of The Giant Of Illinois the real-life story of Americas tallest man and hear the moments as they produce beauty from the tale of his passing from this world - making death into a transformation where 'the sky was a woman's arms'. Weightless Again starts off as a for the plight of the American Indians and covers suicide and the joy of sex all in the search for that moment of transendence of feeling weightless - myself I prefer sex to the other option of jumping from the Golden Gate bridge but it takes all sorts. How can you resist songs of low-life in Chicago, and whiskey and snakes in the rural backwaters? Eccentric, tinged with moments of genius. There are perhaps four great songs here but the lyrical dexterity of the rest makes this The Handsome Family's most satisfying album to date. | |
