The White Stripes are a kind of revivalist band - a punk re-interpretation of the blues, American 60s Nuggets punk and even 60's pop. I remember first hearing Handsprings and revelling in the 60's coffee shop atmosphere and the sheer wit of the lyrics. Hearing them live in full flow on The John Peel Show was a breathtaking experience. On Elephant they start off with their foot off and on the accelerator on Seven Nation Army adding distorted guitar chorus to a menacing backbeat verse. Black Math is an out and out rocker before it all calms down a bit - a lull before the storm. It is an uneven album - I just love the blues based songs where the guitar is used as an offensive weapon, but the other songs are charming and witty and affecting too. However, there is no finer sound than the White Stripes putting the amps into overdrive. The Hardest Button To Button is disturbing lyrically and musically - "we named him baby, he had a toothache, he started crying, ...I grabbed a rag doll stuck some pins in it, now were a family and we're all right now". I can't help feeling that The White Stripes are actually the true bastard progeny of Led Zeppelin. So many other bands have re-interpreted Zeppelin and taken some elements but Jack and Meg White have the same roots and the blues influence is in their blood. They add a good slice of humour to the mix as well. Meg Ryan sings on the final track: "I love Jack White like a little brother" - the truth is, Meg, we all love Jack White. | |
