This was the debut album of Willard Grant Conspiracy and never released commercially - you may be able to find used copies (my copy was 811 of 1000) or it may get a small label re-release. It was recorded in a home studio when Willard Grant were a very loose collection of musicians based around Robert Fisher and Paul Austin. It is a much more hesitant affair than Flying Low, their first full release, and Robert Fisher never displays the full range and power of his voice although much of the instrumental playing is excellent especially from Paul Austin who I rate as my favourite acoustic guitarist for the clarity and simplicity of his playing. What you get is a collection of beautiful songs and a much quiter, more relaxed atmosphere than their later work. You can hear all the elements that will thrill you in their future releases.Child's Prayer is amongst their best songs ever and mixes sentimentality with the wish to 'burn the flesh that is weak'. Oh Mary is a song of resignation and disappointment with stunning strummed guitar that lifts it into a minor classic. The last 26 minutes of the 74 minute CD is just a filler of fire crackers going off at Chinese New Year and I can't imagine anyone listening all the way through that. Not the best album to buy as an introduction to Willard Grant Conspiracy but even though it's uneven it has a lot of highs and kind of creeps up on you. The sort of album that afficianados will treasure. | |
